The Education Buffet for Reading, Writing and Math
Online Activities, Games and Worksheets for Kindergarten, First/Second Grade and English Language Learners

This site is for elementary school teachers, parents and children with a focus on kindergarten, first and second grade. It can also be used for English language learners, regardless of what country they may hail from. The links below provide interactive, online activities, games and worksheets for kindergarten, first and second graders in reading, writing and math. I'm not going to give you 50+ sites for each subject because most are identical to each other. I've put together what I think are the best and posted them here for you. As a first grade teacher I can vouch for the fun and effectiveness of every reading, writing and math activity, game and worksheet. Hopefully, everyone will get as much enjoyment from these activities as I do!

School Express - A super site for online games that allows students to practice skills. It also offers dozens of free software programs for teachers. Great fun with many good downloads. If you skip this site it's at your own risk, my friends.
AOL at School - Don't be fooled by this site's appearance. It has some nice interactive writing lessons for primary students. The spider writing that allows kids to write the alphabet is way cool! You want to be way cool, right?
Fun Brain - Loads of fun math games to play with nice graphics. Do yourself a favor and let your students play here awhile. You'll be glad you did.
Word Play - This is a PBS site with loads of fun reading activities including interactive online vocabulary and word games. A definite must for early readers and second language learners. Once on the site be sure to check out the 'Stories' link as well as the 'Games' link. They are both rich in content.
Write a Paragraph - A very serious, to the point site that actually guides your students as they write a paragraph. No bells or whistles here just a good solid tutorial that I think is very beneficial. Probably best for the latter part of first grade and above but if you have kids that are ready now lead them to it.
Homeschool Math - Nice assortment of math resources including arithmetic worksheets, math e-books and a resource link list with emphasis on interactive content and games.
Scholastic - A vast assortment of ideas and games. I especially like the Clifford Book section
that allows kids to read along and provide answers. There also are sections for kids, teachers, parents, administrators and librarians. A fabulous site from our good friends at Scholastic. Way to go, guys and gals!
P.S. I wish I could have stayed a kid forever!
Write an Essay - Like the above site this one guides your students as they write multiple paragraphs about a single topic. Best for advanced first graders and above. Give it a try. I think you'll be happy. Who knows, maybe you'll use it for your own writing! Your kids would get a hoot about that! And isn't it nice to hear them laugh?
Math for Kids - Good interactive site with games such as concentration and 'add-it-up'. There is also a tutorial on counting money and a free worksheet generator to fit your each and every need.
Game Goo - Somebody please help me because I can't stop playing around on this site! Dozens of interactive online letter and word games for different levels of early readers. The sound effects are loud and humorous so you might want the kids to use headphones for this. If you don't, you might want to invest in some earplugs! Just don't lend them to
anyone else. Ear wax should be kept private!
NCTE- The National Council of Teachers of English has put together a wonderful collection of online writing and reading tutorials and activities. Too many to mention but each and every one is topnotch and worth the time. Only my opinion but there is a good chance this site will be the only one you'll ever want for your writing needs.
P.S. Kids love it when you tell them they are cool!
Math-Drills - This site has every math worksheet imaginable. It even lets you print graph paper.
Coolmath - Exciting and fun resources for students of all ages as well as interesting sections for teachers and parents.
Manatee - This site is great for online reading comprehension. It provides stories and questions complete with online grading. A good center for your classroom. Many thanks to the people in
Manatee County, Florida for this very nice site.
Literacy Center - Here's one for teachers of kindergarten or those with special needs kids or second language learners. Available in Spanish, too, there are nice online activities for letters, numbers, shapes and colors. Solid, basic tutorials.
A Plus Math - Good for playing online concentration, math bingo and flashcards. Nice section on building worksheets for counting money, too.
ReadQuarium - Simply the best. Great interactive online practice in phonics, fluency and comprehension. Bookmark this site for your classroom. I use it often. In fact, if I had to pick just one site from this list it would either be this one or Starfall. Do not overlook this website, teachers!
P.S. Have you told someone they're cool lately?
Writing Fix - What a helpful site this is! Perhaps I'm biased since it's from my state of residence, Nevada, but I challenge you to find another writing site for kids that has as much valuable content as this one. Among just about everything I really like the online games they have. Please do not miss this site!
Math.com - An astronomical amount of information and activities for kids, teachers and parents. Included is a fabulous math glossary with terms you may not have heard since high school!
Funschool Games - A very good game site which will challenge kids to utilize their critical thinking skills. Over a dozen different games, many of which are clue-driven mysteries. I give this site an A+.
P.S. Smile if you think kids are the greatest!
Create Your Scenario - This one is a winner! All interactive, kids get to write a 7 sentence play for several animal characters. Kids choose which animal will say what and get to title their creation. Super fun!
Hungry Frog - This a fun site where kids play an exciting number fact game with a frog! A nice tool that's fun and easy to learn.
Primary Games - A great selection of interactive games for K and above that includes Fowl Words, Months of the Year, Hangman and many others. If you're not careful you might find yourself playing around and wondering where the last two hours went!
P.S. Keep teaching 'till you can't teach another thing!
Sentence Clubhouse - Yet another interactive site that allows students to correct errors and decide if the sentence is a statement, command, question or exclamation. This tutorial also informs students whether they are right or wrong. A simple but useful site for practice.
AAA Math - A superb interactive site where kids can get online math practice while having their answers graded. I let my students use this in class as a learning station.
Starfall - This is one of the best learning-to-read websites you're going to find. This might be the one I would pick if I had to choose just one. Has fantastic online tutorials and is great for second language learners. Perfect for kindergarten and first grade.
P.S. Keep on being number 1!
Make A Comic - Students get to create a three panel comic strip. They can choose the character, the emotion, and then write text in the balloons. This site also has a tremendous amount of useful resources for Language Arts and beyond. Don't miss it!
Money Instructor - This site is great for teaching kids to count money. Granted, it's a difficult concept for young ones to grasp but this site really helps them achieve.
